Home Is Where The Sun Is

As the holiday season approaches, people are looking to escape the cold big cities of the North and visit the Sunshine State. Either in search of a beach getaway in Miami, drawn by the magic of Disney World in Orlando, or visiting their retired parents in Tampa, these three cities account for 11% of all searches for Christmas flights in the United States.

About this visualization

We have selected 73 cities that were either the biggest cities in their state, or had airports with at least 1 million passenger enplanements in 2014 (according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Using Google Keyword Planner, we have collected search volumes for keywords like “flights to <city>”, “flights to <city, state>” between all the cities in the dataset. Search volume was restricted to November and December 2015 to better reflect holiday season searches. The resulting figures were weighted by the population of the cities to adjust for the population bias of bigger cities.
