The Douglas Fir is a longstanding favorite Christmas tree variety, particularly in the West where the Douglas Fir is a native species. The California Bigcone Douglas Fir is nearly identical to the Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), but is recognized by its giant cones (including in its scientific name – 'macrocarpa'!)
